Appearing for UGC NET Qualifier Exam for the first time in December 2006, I was really at a loss on how to prepare for it, because UGC does not provide any old papers. Anyhow, now that it is done and over, here are some questions from that exam, to the best of my memory.

XP Themes, Vista Transformation & Spybots

Using Spybots S&D on a WinXP computer and wondering why the inbuilt updater gives an error “Cannot open AVI”? I don’t know why it happens, but if you have installed Vista Transformation Pack (VTP) to enliven your desktop, Spybots update will give just this error. So get rid of that Transformation Pack because Spybots is definitely worth more than any desktop enhancer. And if my experience is anything to go by, VTP is easier to install than get rid of. Had to go through the complete routine; uninstall VTP, run system file checker (SFC, to restore changed files), uninstall and reinstall Internet Explorer 7 (which stopped working thanks to SFC, I guess), not to mention the zillions of reboots…

Anyways, if, like me you’re sick of Microsoft’s Luna theme and you want to take a lightweight (read non-bloatware) route for new desktop themes, go for uxtheme.dll patching and grab some themes from DeviantArt. Now, if you were smart enough to install (and more importantly, uninstall) VTP, you’ll surely understand how to go about it. And if you’re not, your own risk, don’t flame me later.

Orchid Innovations Bluetooth USB Dongle Drivers

Looking for drivers for the bluetooth USB dongle? There are no specific drivers for this device. The Orchid Innovations USB-BT dongle (at least the one I own) contains chipset from some Integrated System Solution Corp. Quick Google search leads me to the page describing the ISSC BT Dongle. The description page provides that this device will work either with Widcomm drivers or the IVT Bluesoleil driver package.

As far as I know, the Widcomm drivers can only be obtained bundled with the product from the manufacturer and Widcomm (now acquired by Broadcom, as the site says) does not provide any public downloads for this driver. So there is not much to choose from. I downloaded the Standard Version of Bluesoleil drivers and the dongle was installed prefectly under WinXP SP2.

There were some problems with Nokia PC Suite but they were finally resolved (read my other post if you face hardware error message with PC Suite BT connectivity).

Update: Thanks Sanjay for updating us. Looks like Orchid Innovations have put up drivers for their products at http://www.orchidinnovations.com/drivers.htm ORC-BT-IVT looks like the driver for the dongle (there are no clear instructions). My Orchid dongle went kaput long ago so I’ve no idea if these work or not. All the best, people.
